Did your roof get damaged in the hailstorm of 2020?
The hailstorm of 2020 caused $1.2 billion in insured damage and was the fourth costliest natural disaster in Canada’s history (according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada).
The City of Calgary has created the Resilient Roofing Rebate Program to help homeowners impacted by the hailstorm replace their roof with resilient roofing. Owners of single family, semi-detached or duplex properties that sustained damage can apply for a $3,000 fixed rebate for installing resilient roofing.
Resilient roofing is a term used to describe roofing materials and systems that are designed to withstand severe weather events. Wind resistance and impact resistance are two key features of a resilient roof. When getting quotes for your new roof, you’ll want to ensure the materials or systems you’re considering are UL or FM Class 4 rating in order to qualify for the rebate.
Did you already install a resilient roof?
The rebate can be applied retroactively to eligible properties that had impact-resistant roofing installed between June 13, 2020 and June 1, 2021.
Rebate good for other roof replacements starting 2022 and new homes starting 2023.
This program is a multi-year program designed to incentivize upgrades from standard roofing products to impact-resistant products that will better protect homes from severe weather damage.
What does resilient roofing do to your home insurance?
Many insurers reward homeowners for making choices in their home that reduce risk. When you add a home security system, or install a backwater valve or sump pump, you will often get lower insurance rates.
Replacing your roof with resilient roofing or choosing a new home with resilient roofing is another risk reduction method that some insurers recognize and may reduce your home insurance premiums. Make sure you talk to your insurance broker as you explore your roofing options to ensure you understand how your choices will impact your premiums.
